Federica Zanca was born in Ferrara, Italy. She received her Master Degree in Physics at Ferrara University, Italy, in 1997. After having obtained a further Master in Science, Technology and Management at the same university, she joined Montell (Shell), Italy, in 1998 as a research physicist involved in X-ray characterization of polymers. She moved to Belgium for a research fellowship at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Brussels, Belgium), in 1999, where she developed a radiation image read-out method for CR systems in collaboration with AGFA-Gevaert. As from August 2000, she was X-ray Product Specialist, at General Electric Medical Systems, (Milan, Italy), where she specialized in X-ray equipment and its clinical application, as well as in business and management related aspects. She returned to Belgium and became R&D Project Manager at the Department of Physics and Concept Engineer in Proton Therapy for Ion Beam Applications (IBA, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium) in 2003. As from 2004, she began to work as clinical medical physicist at the University Hospitals Leuven, (Leuven, Belgium). While working, she obtained a master-after-master in Medical Radiation Physics (2005) and a PhD in Biomedical Science at the Faculty of Medicine of the same university (2009). In 2014, after 10 years at the University Hospitals Leuven, she returned to GE Healthcare where she worked as Director of Clinical Excellenc, till 2018. Between October 2012-December 2016 she was also Associate Professor at the Department of Imaging and Pathology of the KU Leuven. She successfully guided several master and PhD students and raised grants. As healthcare professional, she has hospital, industry and academic experience. From a research perspective, she has been conducting clinical research for the past 20 years. Her research topics span several areas in medical imaging and oncology. Trough investigation of equipment performance focus on quality, and systems standardization, her research aims at delivering high quality care of patients. From a clinical point of view, she has been liaising closely with medical doctors, technicians and other medical physicists, advising them on the application or assessment of new technologies and protocols in clinical practice and supporting them in their clinical research through innovative approaches. From a business prospective she partnered with healthcare stakeholders to identify opportunities of improvements to unlock value in the era of digital industry for an outcome-based patient care. As per June 2018 she works as a freelancer Healthcare Consultant, helping industry and hospital business to thrive towards clinical excellence.
